While promoting his new Paramount holiday film Ebenezer, Johnny Depp revealed that he is open to stepping back into the boots of Captain Jack Sparrow for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie—provided the script gives the characters and audience a proper farewell.
Speaking about his potential involvement in the long-gestating sequel, Depp emphasized his close loyalty to longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer:
“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note. I will go to work with Jerry Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything. Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”
Jerry Bruckheimer previously confirmed to Deadline and Variety that active discussions with Depp have taken place while the team works on locking down the right screenplay. Bruckheimer noted, “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page.”
Depp headlined five Pirates films between 2003 and 2017 (most recently Dead Men Tell No Tales). Every installment grossed over $650 million globally, with Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and On Stranger Tides (2011) each surpassing $1 billion, bringing the franchise total to $4.5 billion worldwide.
While Depp stopped short of confirming an official deal is signed, both he and Bruckheimer have now publicly signaled interest in closing out Jack Sparrow’s arc once the script is finalized.
